Michigan Drive Sober Enforcement Runs August 14-September 7: What Drivers and Taxpayers Should Know

Ready when you are.
Status: Confirmed official campaign and statistics; enforcement results pending. The Michigan State Police announced the statewide Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign on August 13, 2026. It will run from August 14 through September 7. MSP and local police will increase impaired-driving patrols. The Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning will support paid ads.
The announcement is a public-safety notice. It is not proof that the campaign has already reduced crashes or deaths. Those results need dated records after the campaign ends. For now, the official release gives the patrol window, the funding source, and state crash totals. Michigan residents can use those facts to judge the program later.
What the official record says
MSP reported that 46 drivers died during Michigan’s Labor Day weekends from 2021 through 2025. The agency said 39.1% of those deaths involved alcohol or drugs. The release also gave 2025 state totals. Michigan recorded 1,002 fatal crashes. Of those, 248 involved alcohol, or 24.8%, and 195 involved drugs, or 19.5%.
The yearly figures point in a better direction, but they do not erase the problem. Alcohol-involved traffic deaths fell from 307 in 2024 to 264 in 2025. That is a 14% drop. Drug-involved deaths fell from 272 to 210, a 23% drop. These are official state counts from MSP. They are not a forecast for this campaign.
Michigan says federal traffic-safety funds support the effort. The money comes from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is managed by OHSP. The campaign is also part of the state’s SAFER by 2030 plan. That plan aims to cut road deaths by 30% by 2030.
MSP reminded drivers that a blood-alcohol level of .08 is illegal. The agency also says police can arrest a driver at a lower level if an officer finds impairment. The limit is not a promise that every lower reading is safe or free from enforcement.
The accountability test comes after September 7
Taxpayers help fund the extra patrols and ads. The useful follow-up is not a count of press releases. Michigan should show which agencies took part and how they used grant money. It should report patrol hours, impaired-driving arrests, and crashes. It should also compare this campaign with the same holiday period in past years.
Enforcement also must be lawful and measurable. A safety campaign should reduce dangerous driving without allowing unsupported stops. Totals for stops, arrests, crashes, injuries, deaths, and case results would help the public check both safety and police conduct. The state can publish those totals without exposing victims or private medical details.
What remains unknown
- Which local departments will participate and the exact amount each will receive.
- How many additional patrol hours the federal funding will purchase.
- How many stops, arrests, crashes, injuries, and fatalities will be recorded during the campaign.
- Whether the August 14-September 7 results will improve on comparable prior-year periods.
BadPD will treat those as open questions, not completed results. Drivers should plan a sober ride before drinking or using a drug that impairs them. The state should publish enough data afterward for residents to see whether the campaign delivered more than a slogan.
